Yesterday I was working on a web page that included a list of 30 Songs. These were part of a course I was working on for new Ukulele players. I decided I wanted to modify the list to put the songs in alphabetical order, and to number them 1 to 30.

The list involved not only song names, but also each name was linked to the actual location of the song. We’re talking about html code here. And in this case the code had to include the song name, link, and number. At the suggestion of ChatGPT the numbers were made smaller and grey in colour.

To make these changes manually would take quite a while, so I thought, “Why not see if Chat can do this job.” So after copying the original code and entering it in the prompt area of ChatGPT I entered my instructions. “Adjust this code so the titles are in alphabetical order. Be sure to include the links. Number the songs from 1 to 30.”

The result took about 15 seconds and was perfect. Chat even made a couple of suggestions that I adopted.

This experience made me aware that there are many tasks like this that can be off-loaded to AI. Until this time I had primarily been using AI to create new material: images with special characters (male, female, kids, seniors), logos and identifying graphics, ads for Facebook and Instagram, the writing of descriptions for new products and longer articles. But this opened new opportunities.

The use of AI has often been criticized for making personal projects mass produced. In other words, for replacing originality and personal effort with machine generated “slop”. There is no doubt AI programs like ChatGPT are often used to “cheat” in this way: create material of various kinds that people then pretend were created by them.

The way I see it this focuses on the wrong thing. AI programs should be viewed as assistants to help with grunt work, make suggestions for new ideas, and serve as a source of information that most of us have no way of knowing other than by going and looking for it. AI helps us look for it. But for the most part it is we who determine what to look for.

There’s no doubt that an AI program like ChatGPT can save you a ton of time.
