Some starter guitar suggestions...

A note about size...

A large guitar is harder to handle and more difficult to begin learning on...especially for children and other smaller people. Do yourself a favour and don't buy (or rent) a large starter guitar!

A note about strings...

Most new guitar players find that their finger tips get sore from fingering the strings. This is because pressing you finger tips down for any length of time aggravates the sensitive skin.

By practicing consistently for 15-30 minutes a day for the first two weeks or so - and not over-doing it - you will build up tougher skin on your finger tips, and eventually callouses.

It might be smart to make your first guitar one with nylon strings. There is one listed below. These nylon strings are not as sharp and hard as steel ones, and they are quite a bit easier on the finger tips.

One suggestion is to rent a smaller, nylon string guitar for a month or two. Then when you are more familiar with how it feels and what to look for, you could try out a number of guitars and get one you like. Many music stores - like Long and McQuade - are quite happy to rent guitars on a short term basis.

An inexpensive 3/4 size Starter Guitar

This J-Z guitar is available at Amazon here*.

*This model wasn't available last time I looked, but will very likely be available soon. Here is another very similar starter guitar.

In the video above (made a couple years ago) I say it cost $119. The one linked here is just $114.99 right now, and it has pretty good reviews. Hard to go wrong for that price. When you want something better the cheap one will serve as a good travel guitar, or to hand to one of your buddies the next time you have a spontaneous jam session.

Lefties, check this out.

A slightly better (Yamaha) 3/4 size Starter Guitar

This 3/4 size Yamaha JR1 guitar is available at Amazon here.

Yamaha guitars are a bit more expensive. But they are usually better built and have better quality tuners.

A full size Yamaha Starter Guitar

This full size Yamaha F325D guitar is available at Amazon here.

If you really want a full size guitar this is a good one to try. But I suggest that you go to a store and try this or other full size models out before buying.
